How Do I Know What Size Bar I Have?Your bar's cutting length (or 'called length') is different from its total oroverall length. The cutting length is the distance from the front of the sawto the tip of the farthest cutter, rounded to the nearest inch. This calledlength is the number used in the selector guide to describe the bars that areavailable for your saw. Be careful; a bar made by OREGON® may take a differentdrive link count than that of another producer.
Here’s a tip: if you have anOREGON® bar, look at the ten-digit number stamped on the motor end; the firsttwo digits, such as 16, tell you the called length.Consumer Chain uses a letter system. What is Chain Pitch?Chain Pitch is the size of the chain, and is defined as the distance betweenany three consecutive rivets divided by two.
OREGON® chain is made in severalpitches - 1/4' is the smallest, 3/8' is the most popular, 3/4” is the largest.Pitch is important because the drive sprocket must be the same pitch as thechain, and if applicable, the bar nose sprocket. The easiest way to determinethe pitch of your chain is to look at the number stamped on the drive link.Seethe chain-pitch-and-gauge chart below. What is Chain Gauge?Chain Gauge is the Drive Link's thickness where it fits into the bar groove. The gauge of the chain and the gauge of the bar must match. OREGON® has severalgauges for chainsaws - such as,.043”,.050',.058” and.063'. Normal wear canmake it difficult to accurately measure chain gauge on a worn chain. Alwaysorder by the number stamped on the drive link of your old chain to assure correctgauge.

How do I measure the length of my chain? The length of your chain is determined by counting the number of drive linksin your chain.
Your drive link count has a direct correlation to your bar’slength. Be careful; a bar made by OREGON® may take a different drive link countthan that of another producer. Here’s a tip: count the number of drive linksin the chain you have now, and write that number down someplace where you canfind it. Or, if you have an OREGON® chain, the drive link count is stamped onthe gold ID link; you can refer to that gold ID link for future reference. What is ANSI?Certain provisions of the safety standard known as'ANSI (American National Standards Institute) B175.1 - Gasoline powered Chainsaws -Safety Requirements' containrequirements designed to reduce the risk of injury from chainsaws sold in theUnited States.
How to Measure Chain PitchThe pitch of a chain refers to the distance betweenits drive links. It is determined by measuring the distancebetween any three consecutive drive links and dividing by two. Example:3/4' dividedby 2 = 3/8'. Sometimes pitch is expressed as a fraction: 3/8' andsometimes it is expressed as a decimal:.404'.Thepitch measurement of a saw chain tells a pro user about to the overallsize of the saw chain.
Usually a larger pitch indicates a heavierand bigger chain. What Most Pro Users Run: The most common pitch used byprofessional saw users in the Pacific Northwest andAlaskais 3/8'. It offers good flexibility, low weight, adequate strength, andgood cutting speed when run on today's high RPM pro saws. What Most Harvesters Run: Harvesters run both.404'and 3/4' pitch chain.Saw Setup: The pitch of the chain, the pitch of the drive sprocket, and the pitch of the bar tip must allmatch. How To Measure Chain GaugeThegauge of a chain refers to the thicknessof its drive links. It isdetermined by measuring the portion of the drive link that fits intothe groove of the guide bar.
It is usually expressed in thousandths ofan inch:.050' or.063'.Thegauge measurement of a saw chain tells a pro user about the strength ofa chain's drive links. Thicker drive links are usually stronger, butthey are heavier. Weight affects performance, and to maximizecutting speed, weight should be kept to a minimum. Like most things in life, there arecompromises.
Pro saw chain is no different. The rule usually is: Runthe lightest gauge chain that stays together and gives you decentservice life. What Most Pro Users Run: Several years ago.063'was most popular. Today, the trend is shifting toward.050'.058' ispopular in some areas, but it is rarely used in the Pacific Northwest.WhatMost Harvesters Run: Harvesters that run.404' usually run.080'gauge chain.
